There was a recent New England Journal of Medicine article about how your life span is determined by your waist band. If your waist is 2″ larger than your hips, you decrease your average lifespan by a couple of years. And your lifespan continues to decrease as your waist size increases.
This seemed to have an interesting affect on folks who heard it. They now know that they certainly want to lose weight because it will affect the length of their lives. But I don’t think this will help people create any greater changes in their behavior than before this report came out. Knowing that smoking decreases your life hasn’t stopped people from starting or continuing to smoke, in my opinion. So I don’t expect this new information to make any major changes in people’s weight.
